Was doing the stirrup slap I do on every colt I ride, and POW, he jumps up and nails me. Did NOT see it coming!

I generally tack up, full rig, when I saddle for the first time, but it's usually on thoroughly desensitized horses, which this one obviously wasn't. Hindsight 20/20, huh!Good Handshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09351184347100246647noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9192838346804605801.post-11907589607913328262009-05-18T13:30:00.000-05:002009-05-18T13:30:00.000-05:00Back when I was breaking colts, before one broke m...Back when I was breaking colts, before one broke me, I always used a saddle that didn't have a breast collar or rear cinch. I always figured the less I had to connect and disconnect, the better off I was.

I certainly don't see that as your mistake here. I agree with you, that you were lacking the consistant forward motion prior to saddling....

We can't guess it right all the time. My training days ended when I tried to fly spray a scared filly on an overcast day. She struck out at the spray bottle, got me in the crotch, and fractured my pelvis.

Some moves we just don't see coming.Luluhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17895025606531963182noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9192838346804605801.post-8928991538834981452009-05-17T13:44:00.000-05:002009-05-17T13:44:00.000-05:00Dunno. Got some good solid trotting circles, without him trying to stop . . . or offer me his hip . . . He's not as in love with me as he was yesterday morning this same time, but he's going to learn to move his feet. Time to start treating him like a horse and not just a mental patient . . .Good Handshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09351184347100246647noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9192838346804605801.post-45004666057537603322009-05-17T12:02:00.000-05:002009-05-17T12:02:00.000-05:00Oh Terri!
